When people hear I live near Sacramento, I get the same reaction over and over:
“Isn’t that kind of a cow town?” It kind of is, but we like it that way.
We moved up from Silicon Valley years ago, and while Sacramento itself didn’t have a ton going on back then, what makes this area so special isn’t just the city; it’s everything around it.
Let me take you through a few of my favorite places and memories, because living here means you’re surrounded by incredible day trips, natural beauty, and family-friendly traditions.
1. Lake Tahoe. Located just an hour and a half from Sacramento, Lake Tahoe is easily accessible. I often left El Dorado Hills early in the morning, arriving at the lake while it was still serene and glassy. The peaceful atmosphere is captivating, though the water can be quite cold, especially outside of summer months, when a wetsuit is advisable.
The experience is undeniably worthwhile.
During my time there, I taught stand-up paddleboarding, surrounded by breathtaking views that leave a lasting impression. The culinary scene is equally impressive, with a variety of dining options. Additionally, the Edgewood Golf Course hosts celebrity tournaments, adding an air of excitement to the region.
The Fourth of July draws large crowds, making it essential to book accommodations a year in advance. However, even a day trip to Lake Tahoe becomes a cherished tradition, offering a perfect escape into nature’s beauty.
2. Cool, California. Another cherished destination of mine is Cool, California, a place known for whitewater rafting. This has become a favorite among my grandkids, who eagerly anticipate our adventures on the river.
I spent several years paddleboarding alongside my best friend. Our experiences were filled with excitement and occasional challenges; we faced some close calls, including getting caught under rocks and enduring a few bumps and bruises. Despite these mishaps, each outing was a joyful adventure that kept us returning for more.
3. Placerville, Hangtown. Hangtown reminds me of Old Town Folsom, but with its own quirky charm. The town is dotted with quaint historic hotels and intriguing spots for gold panning, making it a delightful destination for visitors.
In the fall, the nearby Apple Hill comes alive, offering a vibrant array of activities. Freshly baked pies, delicious cider, and lively harvest festivals fill the air with enticing aromas and festive cheer.
One of the highlights of the season is the opportunity to cut down your own Christmas tree, creating a memorable family tradition. Alternatively, for those who prefer convenience, like myself, purchasing a pre-cut, flocked tree is a wonderful option.
4. Folsom. We raised our children around Sutter Street in Folsom, a vibrant area where my husband established Snooks Candies, a beloved third-generation chocolatier. Their macadamia nut turtles remain my absolute weakness.
Sutter Street truly comes alive on the Fourth of July, featuring cattle runs and lively parades. We would ride our horses behind the longhorns, pulling wagons with our gypsy horses, while our kids showcased llamas as part of the Future Farmers of America (FFA) program. The street is filled with pubs, live music, and charming little shops
Not far from Sutter Street is the original powerhouse that once illuminated all of Sacramento. Visitors can explore the historic site and stroll down to the river, where we often paddleboarded past Folsom Prison. The sound of bells ringing would echo as water hoses playfully sprayed us, adding an element of fun to our outings. The area is strikingly beautiful and surprisingly clean, making it a delightful escape.
5. Rancho Cordova and Sacramento. Another enjoyable route is to float from Rancho Cordova all the way into Sacramento. Along the way, you’ll encounter groups tubing, laughing, and enjoying music; it feels like a giant floating party. Sacramento itself offers a wealth of experiences; the Capitol building is truly stunning, and the rose garden outside is one of my mother’s favorite spots to visit.
If you want more activities, San Francisco’s just two hours away. On weekends, we’d jump in the car and head to San Francisco or Marin County. The headlands there are incredible. So many options, whether you’re looking for hiking, restaurants, or just a day by the water.
Sacramento is not perfect. It has been difficult to witness the worsening homeless situation in the city. However, my fondest memories were created in the surrounding communities, where I truly felt a sense of connection and joy.
So if you’ve written Sacramento off as a cow town, think again. It’s not about the city limits; it’s about the access, the lifestyle, the adventures right at your doorstep. From rivers to redwoods, chocolate to cattle runs, there’s so much here to fall in love with.
So, whether you’re a local or just passing through, I invite you to explore the hidden treasures around Sacramento. You can also contact me at 916-220-5700 or gail@gaildemarco.com if you want more information about buying, selling, or investing in Sacramento.
